CHURN Live at Nightclub 9:30 circa 1989
This is the ONLY live footage from the original line up of the band "CHURN". This video was recently found by Brice Smith, the man who shot the footage. There is a lot of back stage footage and banter as well as the sound check and full show.
Churn was formed in Arlington VA in 1989 with Barrett Jones on guitar and vocals, a 19 year old Dave Grohl on Drums and Stafford Mather on Bass. This line up was unfortunately fairly short lived as we could only get together occasionally when Dave wasn't on tour with his other band "Scream". After Scream broke up, Dave went on to join some seattle band called Nirvana. Barrett soon followed his friend out west, and ended up touring as Dave's drum tech. Churn would continue to play for many years after in Seattle with different line ups, and also released 2 CD's "Titus" and "This Way To The Other Side" ( find on Spotify under Barrett Jones)

-Apologies, the video is very dark (lacking light) and sounds terrible, as was the limitations of consumer cameras back then.

Story Time - Bumbershoot 97 Foo Fighters encore

Here's my story of how it came to be that I was the first person to sing with the 3 remaining Nirvana members in front of 30,000 people the first time they had been on stage since Kurts death. It was a surreal moment, and one I will not forget.

It sounds like so many bands from late 80's and early 90's, like Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. Nirvana wasn't the only band with that sound and Dave and Kurt had pretty similar taste in music.
Has Barrett or Dave ever said how Dave recorded the drums to the 1st FF record? What did Dave play along to while tracking drums? A click, a guide guitar track, someone playing guitar, nothing? Any responses appreciated.
Dave tracked the drums first without a click or guide track, just the song in his head. Anytime there was space in the song without drums he would play the high hat to keep tempo for the subsequent overdubs and we would then mute during the mix. He would more times then not get the drum track on the first take.
@@laundryroomstudio Thanks so much for the insight.
I love FF, they're my favorite band ever. The recent albuns are good, but the old ones are so fuc*ing special. I miss grunge so much.
God this is amazing
Great video. I saw them live twice before they split.
Like this if you're like me watching this 30 years after the album came out.
Duuuuude what!! What a gem! Thanks Barrett!
“You should call Courtney …” burn 😅
Yep
I think this song is Dave’s breaking point from nirvana, it’s definitely going for the feel, and it was written in Nevermind days, but it’s different enough that it sera it apart, it’s weird that it sounds like a farewell, a goodbye to something or someone, cold and slow, almost like they knew what was going to happen back then, kinda sad and freaky
Dave’s serious as a heart attack about calling Courtney for publishing rights to stay away
Where can I hear the full version of the gods look down demo?
Unfortunately it’s not out there
@@laundryroomstudio okay, thank you for your answer.
I have that recording on cassette on that eddie Vedder pirate radio show.
From Nashville & was there on 5 yard line! If dont remember it was also the day Princess Diana died during Sonic Youth's set! Missed bus back to Everett & slept behind the Science Museum!😅 Had no idea this on here. Hella fun dude! Thanks for the memories!!! 🤘🌎❤️
Awesome that you were there! I didn’t realize it was the same day princess Diana died!
@@laundryroomstudioHad no idea if you'd respond, this vid 9 months old?😅 Yeah, saw the newspaper headlines walking into McDonald's next morning & counted hrs back. From what I remember it was also Pat's farewell show before he left the first time, fyi, die-hard Foo fans! Tbh, Nirvana/"Grunge" wasn't really my Jam when hit. I'm 52 & grew up in podunk wagon-wheel boot-scootin' Hee Haw Land, Old Nashville with the likes of Todd Milsap (Ronnie's son), Shelton Williams (Hank III), & Harmony Korine. FUCT Infectious World 9+ min tells all. I remember getting Soundgarden SST tape, '89? & only really cared for Big Dumb Sex??? Was more into Cro Mags & Exploited. But i joined a touring band in '93 living off "Book Your Own Fukn Life" & had a blast! I tried letting people know about this show when Taylor died. The ground footage minus reunion is actually a great show to watch once you get past first few songs of crowd going ape!😅 I also try & tell those who don't know that regardless of Dave's fame from Nirvana, I've never seen another artist work so hard to get what he's got! I saw him 1st tour, 2 more times on this tour, & 7 more times before I got burned out in 2010.😅 And I missed them once in Miami when had tix & they had to cancel. And why? Because Dave played any & everywhere!!! A BEAST OF A ROAD DOG!!! Saw him a month or so after Bumbershoot back in Nashville at a Vandy show & afterwards was in parking lot having a brew & Dave walked out to his bus all by himself & told the small gathered crowd to hold on a min, had to put his stuff on the bus & be right back! And he came out talked to EVERYBODY!!! It was impressive as hell! The stories fans hear about him are true! We even talked for min about Bumbershoot! But I didn't think to tell him something he may not have been aware of. On April 8, 1994 my band & a couple others were on break from touring & headed down to Atlanta to see Frank Black and the Ramones. On the way we kept hearing non-stop Nirvana blocks on radio between flipping tapes & wondered why, then got the terrible news. That night the usually quiet Joey dedicated Pet Sematary to Kurt! I don't remember what Frank said, as I wasn't a big Pixies fan either. A year & a half later, right before my band was scheduled to meet a Warner Bros subdivision label head my soul-mate, drummer, & writing partner was killed in a car wreck. So when heard Foos/Dave's debut it blew me away & helped me cope! Those first 2 albums especially, & Bumbershoot, were a Blessing to me friend! You just dont know!!! Thank you for your reply! It's really nice to have channels like this. The community, even if mostly subliminal on this end, is a Blessing the world needs now more than ever! Will subscribe & see what else you got. Just want to finish by saying to anyone who wanders in here & doesn't realize it, as fukd as things may seem or be, NEVER FORGET, THEEESE ARE STILL "THE DAYS"!!! LOVE & PARTY ACCORDINGLY, FRIENDS!!! Prayers still go out to Dave with loss of his mom & Taylor! He (& you!😅) helped me & will always be in my heart! Rock On!!! 🤘🌎❤️
I love this song, but Dave looked awkward at first. Wasn’t thrilled with it.
All of these tracks are like Dave's Incesticide.
davecesticide we NEED IT‼️
Eat Out yr Heart, Bucket-head & All the Other Bucket-part People!
These need to be released!!! 😂
It's my favourite Foo's song. This version is amazing to me.
The songs about Courtney Love the dead soul of a woman and in the video had a disease ball floating around which was meant to be her.I was the first in my area to have this cassette before it came out and i still got it and listen to it in my truck cassette player today
Dave has come up w some much Musical shit it's crazy
That snare is a C so its in tune with weenie beenie lmao
Almost 30 now
Great interview. 👍
“Damion/Damon’s radio show” refers to the New Music Hour hosted by New Music Guru Damon Stewart on FM100 KISW, Seattle’s Best Rock. Stewart is the voice heard at the beginning of “Searching With My Good Eye Closed” on Badmotorfinger.
floaty is so fucking good, and absolutely wouldve fit on in utero
choice cut!
You said it!
Yeah, let’s stay silent during Slackers Password and pretend like it wasn’t a potential hit or anything. No big deal.
How did you get Dave's vocals to sound so distorted on Weenie Beanie ? Low pass filter, overdrive etc?
I ran a mic into the guitar amp, a marshall JCM800 mic'd with another 57
Sounds like a Superunknown outtake years before Soundgarden even released the album. Wow!
Did you guys ever play Living on Command live? What a driving bass line and drum part. That song makes me sweat
Thanks! Unfortunately this was never played live
@@laundryroomstudio thank you for replying Barrett. Also thanks for the years of music
That’s why this is their best song: that riff throughout the entirety of the song. Makes you wonder how Dave imagines his songs up. Great work.
I need two things: A re-issue of the Pocketwatch Demos on CD and a CD of every demo from the first album era.
This song is so good. I became addicted since i discovered it in spotify months ago. And loved this early version.
Killer lead
You always played the killer leads!
How good is this? I love it! Relatable lyrics like “Why do i suffer so, Why do i want to go”? How many times I think of these words. Simply beautiful 😍
One of my favorites
this is the famous laundry room , in the Sappy song ?
these recordings are pure gold! And yes Dave looks really impressed by Floaty, like wow I ve wrote this song and it sounds really beautiful. and it IS. One of my favorite to listen to and to play on guitar. First album is a big part of my teen age.
Legendary

OMG BARRETT!!! You are a music history scholar!!! What in the WORLD?! Who all IS this?? How old was everyone? Dave is absolutely a natural talent. CRAZY. That drum solo made me sweat😂 Awesome! Big props to the videographer who couldn’t decide where to point the camera. 😂😂😂Thank you for saving EVERYTHING!!
DG would have been 19
This tune is on par with almost anything done by the Foo Fighters. I love this era of "punk" coming out of the 80's hardcore into more melodic territory
That drum solo is fucking insane!
I just love the way this stuff can just churn-up out of the blue when you least expect it. Thanks so much for sharing this Barrett.

this is wonderful
💦WATER WATER WATER WATER WATER💦 lmao
I love the difference in reaction from DG in the two songs. The first one seems like he’s embarrassed by it, the second one his ears perk up and he seems intrigued, almost as if he might want to revisit it. Good stuff, I just stumbled upon this and being a huge Nirvana/early foo fan this is absolute gold for me. The new stuff doesn’t do it for me.
